Loki Review –
Well, we have finally hit sequel territory with the MCU’s television shows on Disney+, and the first cab off the rack is Loki. I may have been excited about this had this been back in 2021, before the first season and then the follow-up Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Now, there is just trepidation. But a solid trailer teased that this might be the season where everything falls into place. But we will see.
So to set the scene, at the end of Season One, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) was kicked through a time door by Sylvie (Sophia di Martino), who proceeded to stab He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors). This has the effect of smashing the primacy of the one timeline, as branches pop up everywhere. Loki is desperate to warn everyone of what is happening, but no one remembers him, and there are statues of Kang everywhere. Now Loki is on the run and might be able to do something about it if he stops time slipping all over the place. We will be looking at the episode as a whole from here, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

I didn’t get around to reviewing Loki: Season One as a whole, so it’s a quick run-through because I think we will need it to give context to this episode and season: it was a hot mess. The acting was fine, some intriguing ideas were floating around, and the cast was good, bar the fact that they woefully underused Eugene Cordero. However, the big issue was that it had three ideas for a season story arc and crammed them into one. Loki finding out about the TVA, the hunt for Sylvie, and what is at the end of time could have all been complete seasons in their own right. But combined together, it was a mess, a fascinating mess, but a mess nonetheless.
With that mood and the show ending on a cliffhanger, I wondered how they would go from there, even before Jonathan Majors was accused of multiple crimes. Having Loki be in the past was an interesting choice because the TVA should not have a history, but it has a present, so there should be a past, and now I have a time travel headache. In some respects, it did feel like a bit of a cop-out to make it easier to move forward when you are unsure who your main antagonist will end up being. But on the other, it led to OB (Ke Huy Quan) having a conversation in the present where he remembers a conversation happening in the past in real-time, which was such a delight.

That could also be because Ke Huy Quan is a true delight, and his presence makes everything better. One thing the Loki series has never gotten wrong is its casting. Tom Hiddleston is a frantic ball of energy blasting from one timeline to the next, giving it his all. Owen Wilson is the audience insert character because he will reveal the techno-babble like no one else. Wunmi Mosaku steals every moment she is on screen, and Kate Dickie & Liz Carr make interesting first impressions.
I think what sold the episode for me was the way they captured my drive as the blast doors started to close. Of course, the rational part of me knew Loki would be fine. They were not going to spaghettify the titular character in the first episode. But as he got yanked to the future and, the suit was being blasted away by pure-time. I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting for what came next. The pacing and drama of it all was captivating.

In the end, do we recommend Ouroboros? Yes, we do. Now last season’s Glorious Purpose, has taught me the lesson of tempering my expectations, and I do that here. Just because they can set up a season, does not mean they can land it. But I am more optimistic now than I was 42 and a half minutes ago.
