Loki Review

After a strong opening, last week’s 1893 was the first time I had pause to wonder if Season Two might not be on as firm a footing as I had first thought. But you can’t count your chickens before they hatch, and we still have half the season to go. With that in mind, let us jump into this episode before the episode starts a paradox it can’t fix.

So to set the scene, after helping Victor Timely (Jonathan Majors) escape with knowledge of the TVA because they were fighting. Miss Minutes (Tara Strong) and Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) make their way to the end of time to see the dead He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) and his crumbling palace. It is here that Miss Minutes reveals that Renslayer helped with the last war, like did most of it themselves, and well, maybe they don’t need another He Who Remains to run the TVA. Which is when Victor Timely arrives in a TVA and might be the only one who can save the world. We will be looking at the episode as a whole from here, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

Now, after hinting at being Doctor Who, but Marvel, for two seasons, this is the episode that they truly leans into it. I mean, the opening moments harken back to the Time Vortex, at least in the visuals. Adding to this, we thrust into full-“wibbly wobbly, timey wimey” when we get to the meeting of Victor and OB (Ke Huy Quan) and discover that they both influenced each other, asking the question, who first influenced whom? Leaning into the weirdness of time travel is where the show works the best.

It is here where we get the most substantial part of the episode, where Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Sylvie (Sophia di Martino) have a heart-to-heart about the realities of the predicament that they are in. There are so many unknowns, and they don’t know if their actions will help or harm. Or even if they are doing right, what do they do in the aftermath? Is it free will, or do they need to play god? Can they even protect all of the multiverse, even if they save the day? They are hard questions and ones that need to be asked.

While it is busy asking its questions, this is also an episode that is not afraid to shift everything up in some disturbing ways. Look, can I think of worse ways to die than being crushed together in a big group? Yes. … but not many. It is a horrifying moment as you hear all those all people dying while Hunter X-5 (Rafael Casal) looks on, and the expression on Renslayer’s face was a choice that probably is not going to aid my sleep tonight.

Once again, I do have to champion the team that put together the set design for the TVA in Season One and Season Two. It is such a wonderful vibe that feels both retro and futuristic simultaneously. It helps give every episode the texture that makes it shine, every frame a joy. Because nearly all of this episode is set in the TVA, it could almost be a bottle episode if not for all the visual effects. But this smaller scope allowed for more character moments, which they needed given how much death happened in this episode, some quite surprising even before we got to that cliffhanger. However, that did allow Natalie Holt to smash it out with her musical score.

Renslayer looks on as she murders people, Miss Minutes smiling in glee in the background.
That is a pair of looks that will haunt my thoughts tonight. Image Credit: Disney+.

In the end, do we recommend Loki: Heart of the TVA? Yes. It answered some of my concerns right from the get-go and then powered on like a rollercoaster rocketing through the tracks. There are only two more episodes to go, and I hope they stick the landing because this has been some of the best MCU television so far.
