TV Review – Rick and Morty: Wet Kuat Amortican Summer

TL;DR – A perfectly fine episode that leans into its Total Recall premise, but not a whole lot else.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Disclosure – I paid for the Netflix subscription that viewed this episode.

Rick and Morty Review

Since we last checked in with Rick and Morty in Air Force Wong, Rick (Ian Cardoni) met his nemesis Prime Rick (Ian Cardoni) after teaming up with Morty (Harry Belden) and Evil Morty (Harry Belden). Covered in blood, Rick reached a resolution to the main narrative arc driving him since the start of the season. Which asks the question, where do you go after that?

So to set the scene, Summer (Spencer Grammer) has spent quite a lot of time doing chores for Rick so that she could earn a doodah. In this case, an Attribute Slider lets her tweak her Strength, Charisma, Dexterity, and Intelligence. The only problem is that Morty wants in on this, and after a tussle and a fall into the pool, we get a Kuato situation. We will be looking at the episode as a whole from here, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

I have noticed this season that there are fewer ‘whole family’ episodes than we have usually gotten. There have been fewer of the “family B-Plots” than usual, with much of the cast being visual cameos in different episodes. So, it was nice to jump back into the world of Summer, who is one of the more interesting characters on the show. She is both completely superficial and someone with a lot of depth once you get to know her.

If I could sum up this week’s episode, what if there was a Taken happening on an alien planet, but they are after Total Recall Kuato’s, which Morty has become. It is enough of a framework so you get Summer to have an adventure focused on her for a change, as she needs to be saved but also can rescue herself. There was a good point in this episode where Rick compares Summer to a cat and Morty to a dog, and well, he’s not wrong. While it was funny seeing Rick accidentally beating his way to a save. The Kuato hook does start to outstay its welcome by the end.

In the end, do we recommend Rick and Morty: Wet Kuat Amortican Summer? Well, seeing how a show can pivot in the back half of the season is interesting. I am not sure that this will be on many people’s rewatches going forward.
