Percy Jackson and the Olympians Review

Well, our first episode, I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher, was all about dipping our toes into the universe of Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell) and the world of hurt that is coming for him. In the follow-up, it is time to rip off that Band-Aid because we are diving into the deep end with the gusto of a charging Minotaur.

So to set the scene, Percy wakes up from a dream with his mother (Virginia Kull) gone and Grover (Aryan Simhadri) looking down on him. He is not in the city anymore, for he is in Camp Half-Blood, a place that is safe for people like him. It might be the only safe place on Earth. Well, as long as he can survive a beat down from Clarisse La Rue (Dior Goodjohn), the daughter of Aries. We will be looking at the episode as a whole from here, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

This is the episode where you get in deep into both how the camp is run and the underpinning mythology that is the basis of every part of the series. We get the 12 Gods of Olympus, Mr D (Jason Mantzoukas) can’t drink booze, Gods have to declare their children, and there has been an agreement between Zues, Hades, and Poseidon, and war is afoot because something has been stolen and someone got intimate when they were not meant to. It is here where we get to meet our first god of the season, and if there was ever a good choice for casting, it was Jason Mantzoukas.

This grounding of the mythology is there to give us the foundation for all the shenanigans that follow because it might be full of Half-Bloods, but a camp is still a camp. After all the profound moments, I liked that we got to have a bit of fun with the Percy sucks at all the different jobs at camp montage. While it is not quite Bartlet yelling at God in Latin, Percy serving shade to his dad about his mother via prayer got pretty close. Generally speaking, I think they did an excellent job of bringing the camp to life, and it all looks good in the close-up. The further you go back, the more hinky it seems, but it is TV, so you can forgive that a bit.

Percy is chosen.

The back end of the episode is all about the Capture the Flag battle, which is one of the most famous moments from the books. Given how much impact this has from the books, I think they did an excellent job of bringing it to life. I liked that we got to see some of the many different personalities play out in the battle. It culminates in a show-off between Clarisse and Percy that is a solid sword battle. Things had an impact, you could feel Percy gain confidence during the battle, and him discovering he is Poseidon’s child worked just as well here.

In the end, do we recommend Percy Jackson and the Olympians: I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom? Yes, I do. Given how good the first episode was, it was nice to see it step up in the second. I am really looking forward to where they go from here because I love a good quest.
