TL;DR – This was a charming start to the series that gives the set-up you need for an adventure like this.

Skeleton Crew Review –
Sometimes, there is a premise so strong that you know it will be interesting and what if Star Wars was also The Goonies is right up there. But a concept will only get you so far. It is the execution that is make or break, and today, we look at the first episode to see if they can marry the two together.
So, to set the scene, a long time ago, in a galaxy far away, The New Republic has been trying to maintain order after the collapse of the Galactic Republic, but piracy remains a significant issue. The life of a pirate is a fraught one, and coups are many. But where there is action, there are also just normal people living their lives on the planet of At Attin. But when Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers) was running late for a test and took a shortcut that did not turn into a shortcut, he instead stumbled on something long buried in the forest. Now, from here, we will be looking at the episode as a whole, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

Well, I don’t think that it will surprise anyone to know that this first episode is 70% set-up, 25% vibes, and 5% pirates murdering a crew of a supply ship. Actually, that last one was a bit of a surprise, considering that it is the first thing we see of the series, and that is not at all the tone of where the show is pitched so far. But mass slaughter aside, I do think we got a good job when it came to building this world. At Attin, it looks perfectly benign as a planet with just enough here and there to make you go, ‘Hmm, that’s a bit odd’. I did like that it was a sort of future version of what a modern Earth city could look like with automated cars on tram tracks.
But the first thing you need to know is how the cast went. And I am happy to say that they are a delight. We all wanted to be a Jedi at some point and play around with lightsabres, and that slight nostalgia permeates the show. So far, all the cast fit into very neat archetypes. Wim is that bright-eyed adventurer type who grew up in the suburbs and just wants to get out. Noel (Robert Timothy Smith/Kacie Borrowman) is the well-meaning friend who just gets caught up in the action. Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) is the rebellious daughter of the chief administrator, Fara (Kerry Condon), who is out looking for a power converter. Where have we heard that before? KB (Kyriana Kratter) is the tech genius who helped get them into this mess but also might be the only one who can save them.

Going into this episode, I think we all knew how this first episode would end, and it does not disappoint. But in the end, we get our big CGI emergence from the ground ship moment, as Wen’s dad Wendle (Tunde Adebimpe) can only look on his son as he blasts away from the planet. While it was expected, I liked how we got to it, with an accidental leaver incidence, a power jumpstart, and then the natural want and desire to push the flashing button. None of the moments felt forced because you could see yourself doing the exact something. In the end, do we recommend Star Wars: Skeleton Crew: This Could Be a Real Adventure? Yes, we would. Honestly, while the opening was all set up, I didn’t mind because the characters were fun. Now the question is, can the show survive the dangers of outer space? And we will need to look at the next episode to see.
