Star Wars: Skeleton Crew: Very Interesting, as an Astrogation Problem – TV Review

TL;DR – Okay, so we are Star Wars x Treasure Island x Goonies. I can work with that.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Disclosure – I paid for the Disney+ service that viewed this series.

Skeleton Crew Review

There are a lot of reasons I want to sit down and watch some TV. It could be dangers, suspense, wonder, or sometimes I just want to have some fun. Well, if Skeleton Crew were only doing one thing right, it would be the fun. But they have a lot more going for them other than just that.

So, to set the scene, things went from bad to worse once the Onyx Cinder blasted outside of the barrier and into deep space. Because the kids didn’t understand just how valuable they were, and what weight the name At Attin had. So, Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), KB (Kyriana Kratter), and Neel (Robert Timothy Smith/ Kacie Borrowman) all end up in the brig at the Pirate Port of Port Borgo. Luckily for them, in the jail cell is also the Jedi Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law), and it looks like it is escaping time. Now, from here, we will be looking at the episode as a whole, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

Putting aside the fact that this week, there are hints of this being a Treasure Island story dancing in the background to literal name drops. I think the addition of Jude Law is something that the show absolutely needed. I didn’t mind the fact that the kids were acting like kids, and it was all blowing up in their faces, but that could only go along for so long. His presence in the show creates both a calming and chaotic effect. He has the level of maturity that the show and the crew need, but he is also absolutely not to be trusted. That is a fun dichotomy to work through.

Once again, the production behind the show is outstanding, finding that interesting line between feeling entirely new and pulling on those heartstrings of nostalgia. Part of that comes from the musical score that feels both jaunty and joyful and fits the show to a tee. Between this and The Penguin, it has been shown that 2024 has a fantastic debut for Mick Giacchino. I also loved the design of Kh’ymm’s (Alia Shawkat) Lair. And no, that was not because she is an alien that loves maps. Okay, it is mostly because she is an alien who loves maps. But I love how everything in the show feels lived in because it helps bring you into the world and makes you appreciate the gas giant backdrop.

In the end, do we recommend Star Wars: Skeleton Crew: Very Interesting, as an Astrogation Problem? Yes, we do. It was the slight shift in the dynamic that the show needed, and now we are on the run from everyone, I would very much like to see where it goes from here.
