TL;DR – The first speed bump for the season

Skeleton Crew Review –
Throughout the series so far, I have been filled with delight and joy. But there is always a feeling that there has to be a bump in the road somewhere; even DS9 had its rocky episodes. Well, unfortunately, it looks like today is the day.
So, to set the scene, after getting a map back in Very Interesting, as an Astrogation Problem, the Onyx Cinder arrives back at At Attin. But instead of the friendly welcome, they are locked into an auto-piolet landing sequence. But something does not feel right because where are all the people? Now, from here, we will be looking at the episode as a whole, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

While this episode was quite frustrating, primarily because it highlights a lot of the annoying behaviours that would probably have gotten all the kids killed by now. What it did do right was focus its narrative on Neel (Robert Timothy Smith/ Kacie Borrowman). They are one of the more interesting characters on the show, in part because of their impeccable implementation from a digital effects perspective. But also because there is a real heart behind the character. So much so that you cheered when they got their big ‘I am a hero’ moment.
However, this episode also highlighted a lot of the issues with the series that have been bubbling away under the surface. Firstly, this show is lit terribly. I know they were going for moody, leaning into the war vibes of At Achrann. However, all it did was make the episode look bland or dull. Modern productions seem to have significant issues when it comes to lighting things well, and this episode is a perfect example of that. Also, if you are going to get The Daniels of Everything Everywhere All at Once fame to direct one of your episodes, let them bring their style to the show. This was a generally boilerplate direction, bar one moment with SM-33 (Nick Frost/Rob Ramsdell) in the climax.

In the end, do we recommend Star Wars: Skeleton Crew: Can’t Say I Remember No At Attin? While this episode did feel like a missed opportunity in places, and the less said about some of the accents, the better. Thankfully, there were still elements that made it work, and hopefully, they continue to carry the series forward.
