The Films from 2018 That Put Some Fun Into Our Lives

The Films from 2018 That Put Some Fun Into Our Lives

In a world full of dower grittiness, it is nice sometimes to sit back, crack a cold one, and just enjoy some fun, and God knows in 2018 we needed it. So today, I take a moment to champion those films that brought the fun, whether through upbeat action, one laugh after another, or that silliness that brings a smile to your face.

So without further ado, these are films that brought the fun in 2018. Be warned that there may be some slight spoilers ahead for the films in question.

Ant-Man and The Wasp

The fun of Ant-Man and The Wasp comes in many forms, there are all the actors doing an amazing imitation of Michael Piña in his flashback montage. There is Paul Rudd doing a pitch-perfect impression of Michelle Pfeiffer. There is a musical score that hums along joyously. Oh and of course little kid Ant-Man cause his suit misfired, so much fun

Bumblebee

It has been a long time since the Transformers franchise has given me anything but consternation, but Bumblebee was not like that. It is full of beautiful character moments, people and robots that feel real, and most of all, it is so much fun. Watching Bumblebee try and walk through a house and just crush everything, fun, watching John Cena yell that you can’t trust them because they are called Decepticons, fun, seeing everyone in their full glory, fun.

Deadpool 2

Deadpool 2

The sequel to Deadpool was just as meta and sarcastic as the first, more so really. Getting mileage out of Josh Brolin’s casting among other things. However, while the sequel had more of a heart than the first film, it also brought the fun, like discovering just how cinematic Zazie Beetz Domino’s abilities were, or by going through the process of bringing a whole new team together only to kill them all off moments later.

Ocean’s 8

A spin-off film with a whole new cast is one of those premises that is designated to be lacklustre, but boy didn’t Ocean’s 8 prove that wrong. Everything about this film is fun, the casting, the heist, the point where it goes wrong, the point where it secretly when right all along, the banter between the cast, look just everything.

The Breaker Upperers

The premise of The Breaker Upperers is that Jen and Mel run a service that helps you break up with your partner … for a fee. I love the kiwi style of comedy, and here it is on full tilt and that is just the montage of breakups at the start. The highlight is when they have to sneak into a police station pretending to be police to keep up their cover, only to be confused for something completely different. Oh, and of course there is Sepa and her gang.

And the Winner is!!!!! – The Breaker Upperers

The Breaker Upperers is at its core a fun film, but that does not also mean it does not have a message to tell. This is its brilliance, you can be laughing at one moment and then thinking hard about your life the next, and then laughing once more. It is such a joy to watch with the far too trusting Jordan, the fierce Spea, the oversharing parents, and the true absurdity of it all.
