Just Jen Attorney at Law

She-Hulk Attorney at Law Review

As we reach this middle part of the season, it has been nice to see She-Hulk revel in these smaller character-driven episodes. Where we get some time to get to know what drives the characters and what their motivations are. The good thing this week is that this episode is all that, but also a little bit more.

So to set the scene, while things are going well for Jen (Tatiana Maslany) at work, an unexpected package has put a pause on things. She has been invited to Lulu’s [her high school best friend but since then, they have drifted apart] wedding. This was a moment to show just how well she was doing. Only Lulu (Patti Harrison) insists that there should be no She-Hulk at the wedding. Back at work, Nikki (Ginger Gonzaga) and Mallory (Renée Elise Goldsberry) have to work for a client that calls himself Mr. Immortal (David Pasquesi) because all his ex-wives and ex-husbands just found out he is alive. Now from here, we will be looking at the episode as a whole, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

Jen breaks the 4th-wall.

Like last week’s Mean, Green, and Straight Poured into These Jeans, the A-Plot and B-Plot are quite separate. As such, we will be tackling them separately. One of the best things about She-Hulk is the character of Nikki Ramos because her confidence and openness make the character work no matter who she is partnered with. Last week we saw that energy with Pug (Josh Segarra). This week we get to spend more time with Mallory. There was an instant report between the two as they bonded over Mr. Immortal’s rubbish. It was also good to see how the lawyers would approach a case where they would 100% lose. The only question is how much?

At the wedding, Jen has to work through being made to feel small when she is at a high point in her life and how to process that. It is a feeling we all have to go through whenever we have to go back in time and place. This feeling is amplified by the appearance of Titania (Jameela Jamil), who is clearly there to gaslight Jen until she can get some revenge. I have to say that the fight was an eventful one for me personally because I was taking a sip of my drink when Titania slipped on the ice and did a header into the floor. As I write this review, I still don’t think I have coughed up all that surprise fluid out of my lungs.

There was a lot of vulnerability on show with Tatiana’s performance this week, which worked for both the wedding storyline, but also to highlight the growing concern about what is happening in the shadows. While finding information on Mr. Immortal, Mallory and Nikki come across the Intelligencia website, but when they dig deeper, they find a plethora of hurtful memes and outright death threats. More than that, we, the audience, know that something more sinister is happening with a lab and trying to get She-Hulk’s blood. It is a small hook, but just what the show needed, first because it continues to show that the writers were on point with the reaction to the show from certain sectors of the internet, and second, it provides a push for the series towards the end of the season.

In the end, do we recommend She-Hulk Attorney at Law: Just Jen? Yes, we do. If nothing else, I think I would recommend the show for the performances alone. There is a joy to every moment where you can feel the cast coming together.

  1. I found this episode to be absolutely entertaining. I know Daredevil/Matt Murdock is coming as is Hulk (and maybe… his son? Oh Yelena, Melina, and Alexei are going to be PISSED about this). I thought it was a nice change of pace in not just focusing on Jen just trying to deal with her own identity issue but also the stuff with Titania. I am really enjoying Jameela Jamil in that role as she is just hilarious. I look forward to Round 4. I also love the stuff with Mallory, Nikki, and Mr. Immortal as that was just hilarious as I love what they did with him. I don’t understand why guys are really hating this show. Is it their time of the month?
