Star Wars: Ahsoka – Part Six: Far, Far Away – TV Review

TL;DR – We get a story from a galaxy far, far away.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Disclosure – I paid for the Disney+ service that viewed this series.

Ahsoka Review

Last week with Shadow Warrior, we got the middle point of the narrative, laying out where everything will be heading. However, while all that was going on, there was part of the story that was absent. The driving force of the season so far. The only question is, was it worth the wait?

So to set the scene, as Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) and Huyang (David Tennant) hop on a ride from a star whale heading to a galaxy far, far away. Lord Baylan (Ray Stevenson), Shin (Ivanna Sakhno), Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto), and Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) rocket into a floating graveyard and the ancestral home of Morgan. But the anticipation does not have to wait for long as the Grand Mothers (Claudia Black, Jeryl Prescott Gallien & Jane Edina Seymour) announce that Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) is on his way. Now from here, we will be looking at the episode as a whole, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

Before we dive into the narrative, I want to talk about the visuals because it shows the best and worst of this series. All of the close-up work of this episode was generally quite good. The little turtle/crab people were a delight, even if some of the transitions from digital to physical didn’t quite work. Also, shout out to the wolf/horse creature for making something that I deeply cared about. I think its relationship with Sabine was one of the best parts of the show. You see the care in the introduction of Thrawn’s battlecruiser, where it has been heavily damaged and patched up in places.

However, while all of this was fantastic, this was the episode where you really saw the limitations of the volume on hand. I am unsure if it was the lack of lighting or how the actors were composited into the scenes. However, whatever the case, it was rough in places. It felt like people stood out of the frame or the background did not come together. As well as this, you start to see just how many locations in this show just so happen to be circles. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

Thrawn
Now that is how you do an introduction. Image Credit: Disney+.

However, this episode excels in its narrative, which had more vibes than the plot, but it worked. As far as introductions go, both the Grand Mothers and Thrawn are some of the best. I mean, it is always nice to see Claudia Black and was that Wes Chatham? If nothing else, Star Wars knows how to do a slow reveal of a battlecruiser, and the reveal of the battalions of dirty stormtroopers was a mood. I have never experienced Lars Mikkelsen’s Thrawn before, and can I say that he makes an immediate presence. You can feel just how perilous he is in one moment and the danger Sabine gambled to find Ezra (Eman Esfandi). This episode was more about introductions and mood, but I liked it. You can feel the repercussions of this episode and how it may play out through the final episodes.

In the end, do we recommend Part Six: Far, Far Away? Yes, we do. I am not sure it does much to move the plot along. However, it brings us into this world and gives us a solid introduction to a character many people are meeting for the first time. If nothing else, we got those critical words spoken for the first time: “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.…”
