TL;DR – This is the first week where we have an almost restrained jump around the timeline.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Review –
It has been a couple of good years for Godzilla, and this year has been no exception. But coming off the hot heals of the delightful Godzilla Minus One, we dive back into the world of intrigue and more than a bit of family dysfunction.
So to set the scene, at the end of Parallels and Interiors, Cate Randa (Anna Sawai), Kentaro Randa (Ren Watabe), May (Kiersey Clemons), and an old Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell) got rescued by the skin of their teeth just before they became titan food, or just succumb to the Alaskan Cold. The only issue is that their rescuers were Monarch who imprisoned them. Deputy Director Natalia Verdugo (Mirelly Taylor) and Duvall (Elisa Lasowski) wonder just what to do with the group and decide to let them go with a long leach to see what they dig up. Well, one quick trip from Nome, Alaska, to the ruins of San Fransisco because if their father had one secret office, he might have a second. We will be looking at the episode as a whole from here, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

We have now dived headfirst into the ‘find out’ part of the season, with Monarch starting to take a more driving force behind the action, even if some characters are unaware of it. Which leads us smack damn into the middle of a family kerfuffle when the other half of the Randa family discovers they have a secret family. This gives us some time to spend with Caroline Randa (Tamlyn Tomita), who is always a powerhouse no matter where she is. The production design of the ruined San Fransisco was well made, but you can feel that the night setting is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.
This week’s focus is Cate as we dive both metaphorically and literally into her past. To get to her father’s office, they have to walk through the ruins of San Fransisco to the Transamerica Pyramid, which is obviously a traumatic experience for her. We see this shown through flashbacks in the days leading up to G-Day, as we saw in Godzilla. For this section to work, you do need to pretend that it is darker than we see because if not, those soldiers must be blind. But this period does explore how what we thought was a bad day for Cate, was much worse. Trauma is a complex beast, so it makes sense that it presents itself in complicated ways.

One thing that we started getting hints about this week is that Monarch has lost its way. This is at the heart of what makes the show interesting. Instead of hinting about this, I would like the show to be a bit clearer about its intentions here. Also, while I am glad that we solved the issue by way of a map, it all felt a little too forced in the moment. Too many things needed to line up for that to happen. It would have also have been nice for Cate’s back story not to have been as disjointed as it was.
In the end, do we recommend Monarch: Legacy of Monsters – The Way Out? Yes, we do. While they are still not perfect episodes, you can feel some things are being held back. There is enough here to intrigue, and I hope it gets a bit more teeth soon.
