Jet Lag: The Game Review

One of the joys I have discovered the past year [thank you to my brother for recommending it] is the wonderful Jet Lag: The Game. This is a weird geography game starring Adam Chase, Sam Denby, Ben Doyle & guests. Geography, Maps, Chaos, and Chasing, count me in. Each new season is a different game, and with the new one starting today, well, we thought it would be an excellent time to explore just why this series works as well as it does.

So to set the scene, Jet Lag: The Game is always some sort of geography competition. In this season, the two teams are racing from the most northern town in the United States of America, Utqiagvik, Alaska, to the southernmost, Key West, Florida. The way the game works is that to go anywhere, you have to unlock a mode of transportation by performing challenges. Once a challenge has been completed, it is locked from the other team. Oh, should I add that there is only one ticket out of Utqiagvik today. We will be looking at the episode as a whole from here, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

I have seen many things in my life, but I have never witnessed competitive snowman building. The determination and skill on show in a chaotic rush for votes, all while you do have to keep more than one eye out for polar bears. The race to find out if you need a carrot for a nose or not is generally one of the most engaging moments of the year. But of course, there is always a race for a plane, and the only thing stopping them is doing a TikTok dance. If you have watched a lot of recent competition shows like Survivor and Amazing Race, you will know just how vital challenge design is. This is Jet Lag’s strength, partly because it has a lot of experience in that field but also because it intimately understands the people playing the game.

Much of what makes the series work is the rapport between the hosts, with the added complication of the guest keeping things fresh. But while that is important, I do want to take a moment to talk about how good the production is. You didn’t need to put the dance moves up when they were trying to learn, but if The Okaihau Express showed us anything, it is that failure is a good descriptor. Add to this some sarcastic “Fun” “Facts”, a banger flop, and a looming timer. But more than all of that, I have to respect the good use of maps that you see in every episode.

In the end, do we recommend Jet Lag: The Game: Artic Escape – We Raced From America’s Northernmost to Southernmost Town? Yes, we would. Indeed, I would recommend getting Nebula to watch it a week early, and I am not being paid to say that. It is honestly a delight to watch, and I can’t wait to see the shenanigans that are coming.
