Percy Jackson and the Olympians Review –
When you have a ticking timebomb with regard to your quest, you need to start moving it. Indeed, our team has to make it across the continental USA in a couple of days, or all is lost. I just hope you don’t have a wave of upset monsters and feuding gods chasing after you.
So to set the scene, after tangling with the Medusa in We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium, the gang Percy (Walker Scobell), Annabeth (Leah Jeffries), and Grover (Aryan Simhadri). Decide to hop on a train to make up some missed time. But things start looking dire when their train cabin is trashed while they are out to breakfast. Good thing there is a friendly lady (Suzanne Cryer) that can help … right … ? We will be looking at the episode as a whole from here, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

It is probably a testament to how good the show has been so far that this was the first time I came out of an episode feeling that it didn’t quite hit the mark, and that is only because it is not quite as good as the one that proceeded. I can’t quite put a finger on just what didn’t quite sit with me as well, and I think it might be that this was an episode where it felt like either they finished the episode early or stretched the narrative to fit the running time. Maybe it was just that ending mired in dirty water that just did not have the impact they were going for.
That is not to say that this is a bad episode at all. Once again, the casting of all the supporting players is top-notch. Echidna, the mother of monsters, works very well in that you probably would not have spotted who she was at first glance if you hadn’t read the books. Sweet but brutal is a complex combination to pull off, but she nails it. I also like the creature design of the Chimera. It feels almost luminescent, dangerous, but beautiful. Also, I do like the framing device of the dreams Percy is getting because it helps add to the mystery, and it also lets us spend more time with Sally Jackson (Virginia Kull).

In the end, do we recommend Percy Jackson and the Olympians: I Plunge to My Death? While it did not hit as hard as some of the other episodes, it was still enjoyable. I hope the big reveal at the end works better in context with next week’s episode. But I still think we are headed in the right direction.
