Reacher: New York’s Finest – TV Review

TL;DR – There comes a point when you are on the run where it is time to start fighting back.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Disclosure – I paid for the Amazon Prime subscription that viewed this series.

A pissed off Reacher.

As we start heading towards the pointy end of the season, there comes a moment when things have to start hitting the rubber. You can only prolong the inevitable so long before you start losing the tension. This week, we can see the start of that shift happening as the team decides not to play defensive anymore.

So to set the scene, at the end of Burial, we discovered just how brutal these people are as they use a tripwire IED to kill a sniper. Their opposition is trying to erase everyone from existence, even the people working for them. Now they see the lengths their opposition is going to. Well, it is time to take the battle back to them. Now from here, we will be looking at the episode as a whole, so there will be [SPOILERS] ahead.

The first half of the episode feels a little looser than we have seen in the show so far, as people shift around before they lay in the final course. It is not to say it is terrible by any means, but we get a bunch of odd moments that move you through the episode. The odd moment with the dude wanting Neagley (Maria Sten) to sit on his lap, the fact that everywhere we go, Reacher (Alan Ritchson) can easily find clothes that fit him, which might be the most fantasy aspect of the show, and then a conversation that goes from zero to 9/11 so quickly. I think these could have ripped the episode apart if it had not been handled as carefully as it was here.

One thing I do want to talk about is the power of editing to ramp up the tension when we go into the final confrontation of the episode, as the gang tries to kidnap Shane Langston (Robert Patrick). We cut between all the different forces that are ready to come in to secure the big bad in the trap. But as we do this, there is a single cut back to Guy Russo (Domenick Lombardozzi). This one cut dramatically shifts the tension of the scene because it should not be there. It is an anomaly that makes you realise that something awful is about to go down. It is a single moment that is not overplayed that still hits hard.

While we are talking about that final action scene, it is good to see they let Reacher cut loose. I did not know there were so many choking hazards in a bus, but I will be looking at it differently when I go to work next week. Also, it was almost hilarious to see Reacher go full-Jurassic Park on that final lieutenant. However, a lot of the stealth kills only work if you believe that the combatants walked around with zero situation awareness because a couple of them should have seen where he was hiding off-camera. It is also an excellent time to point out how good Domenick Lombardozzi has been this season because his apparent death hits hard at the close of the episode.

In the end, do we recommend Reacher: New York’s Finest? Absolutely. Honestly, this might be one of the most consistent shows I have watched in quite a while. Each episode provides a solid bedrock for the action that follows, and the action is always a delight.

  2. what a joke, cop rides streets of nyc getting shot at with machine guns and doesn’t call back up or have tires blown out, then gives himself up at the end? Pointless. Also Reacher in wide open shooting at a helicopter with a handgun as bullets rain down on him from automatic weapon fire above, again, total joke. One can suspend disbelief only so far….oh yeah, track someone down by inviting to play a video game, right, like that is likely. Then the kid hides in back of car being shot at never getting hit and eventually leaves safety of car to just run away from hail of bullets….wow! Shark is jumped Reacher, time to wrap this up.
