Percy Jackson and the Olympians Review

We are getting to the pointy end of the season, and we are about to dive into the penultimate episode of the season. It is the time when you have to stop holding your cards close to your chest and to use the metaphor from We Take a Zebra to Vegas, you have to go all in. Well, I am not sure we quite get that, but maybe something close.

So, to set the scene, after being given a hint as to where there might be a portal to the underworld, our gang of Percy (Walker Scobell), Annabeth (Leah Jeffries), and Grover (Aryan Simhadri) just have to get by Procrustes or as he likes to be known Crusty (Julian Richings), kin he may be to Percy, but danger is his game. But no matter what your obstacles are, walking into the underworld is no mean feat. We will be looking at the episode as a whole from here, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

Well, for the penultimate episode, I am a little bit mixed because there were parts that soared, but while it was an overall fine episode, it did feel like there were some missing pieces. But the strengths were undoubtedly the acting. Virginia Kull was such a great find for the show, and you can feel her pain in having to protect Percy (Azriel Dalman) even though it hurts them. You can feel the pain of wanting to do what is best for your child, even when they don’t understand. Also, her conversation with Poseidon (Toby Stephens) might be one of the highlights of the series so far.

While I didn’t mind the trek the gang took through the underworld and the amusement of them trying to bribe Charon (Travis Woloshyn) only for them to get a Cerberus in their faces. However, while I understand from a practical perspective why they championed Silent Hill during their walk through the underworld, it felt like they were constantly walking through a grey soup. It is also the first time where you could really tell they were filming a sequence on a digital set. It is a TV show, so you do give some allowances, but even then, it felt muddled, like you could see the budget showing.

However, we did get to see the plot move forward at lightspeed, as we go through a couple of different bad guy scenarios before landing on Kronos (Nick Boraine) as our big bad for the series. Even though he might have jumped to that conclusion a bit too quickly in the show, I liked that it showed that Percy had been listening to all the different stories he had heard during his quest. I also liked that they didn’t do some sort of Annabeth fake-out, given she was not there at this point. I will say that I think this season has had some issues with pacing, and I fear that we are about to rip through the final episode.

In the end, do we recommend Percy Jackson and the Olympians: We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of? Yes, we still do, even though there were some issues. The characters are still the most substantial part of this shown, and even if some of the production does not quite come together, it is still a good watch.
