Skeleton Crew Review

If there is one thing that I will always appreciate Skeleton Crew for, okay, other than for making me learn how to spell skeleton correctly, is that it brought the fun back to the Star Wars universe. Now, I don’t mean that they brought jokes back. Every film in the modern era has had its fair share of quips. I mean that joy you get when you have a smile on your face because what you are watching is fun. Today, we will see if they can continue that moving forward.

So, to set the scene, well, things are not looking good for the kids, Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), KB (Kyriana Kratter), and Neel (Robert Timothy Smith/ Kacie Borrowman). For in You Have a Lot to Learn About Pirates, Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law) betrayed them all by forcing SM-33 (Nick Frost/Rob Ramsdell) to declare that the dubious force user was now captain. Not wanting to be a part of his dastardly plan anymore, Wim has a quick thought and yeets the kids through a trap into the floor. Now they all have to work out where to go from here, trapped on the bottom of a mountain, away from their ship, betrayed by the one person they trusted. Now, from here, we will be looking at the episode as a whole, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

Today’s episode was directed by Bryce Dallas Howard, who has been working in the Star Wars space since all the way back in Season One of The Mandalorian. Because of this, she has a lot of experience in how to make the best out of the Star Wars machine that puts these episodes out. Which has the habit of making her entries some of the strongest in the season, like her time in Book of Boba Fett. Here is no different because I think she gets the most out of all the young actors in some surprisingly dramatic scenes, which gives me a lot of hope for her Flight of the Navigator remake.

Bar some fun moments where Jude Law gets to chew on all the scenery in both his escape, capture, and then monologing for his life. All of this episode is about how the kids will get out of their current predicament, and it is not an easy answer. They have all just been betrayed by the one person they had let into their circle of trust, and that would be emotionally devastating for someone with years of emotional experience. It made sense that this would be the tipping point for a fracture and that the party would split up.

Now, I don’t think anyone was expecting that split to be permanent, and the show knows that, but we did get to have a good time with a different team-up than we have seen so far. Win and KB get to have a heart-to-heart about what it is like living with an injury caused disability that people can’t readily see. Fern and Neel get to bond through the medium of mountain climbing, which, in my experience, leads to relationships breaking down and not being forged, but each to their own. There were some genuinely heartfelt moments here that helped sell the ‘we are now a crew’ moment at the end, where the Onyx Cinder sheds its crusty outer layer to reveal a sleek spaceship hiding underneath. I am not sure how I feel about all the little techno-hermit-crabs leading KB and Wim to their potential deaths, but maybe that is still the after-effect of watching Love and Monsters.

In the end, do we recommend Star Wars: Skeleton Crew: Zero Friends Again? Absolutely. This was a fantastic episode that got us to explore different facets of the cast we have gotten to know so far. It clearly lets every character have a moment to shine, and I am here for it. Have you watched Skeleton Crew yet? Let us know what you thought in the comments below.
