We looked at the films that hit us in the feels with emotions in our last awards. Now it is time to pivot hard to the other side of the spectrum and look at the films that were a riot of fun. So today, I take a moment to champion those works that brought joy, whether through upbeat action, one laugh after another, or that silliness that brings a smile to your face.
However, I note that this might be the most subjective of all the lists because what people think is funny can vary drastically.
Our Highly Commended Films in 2024 are: Abigail, Deadpool & Wolverine, Gladiator II, Jackpot!, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, My Old Ass & Transformers One
Our Highly Commended TV in 2024 are: Agatha All Along, Black Doves, Doctor Who, Knuckles, & Star Trek: Prodigy
So, without further ado, these works brought fun in 2024. Be warned that there may be slight spoilers ahead.
The Nominees Are –
Challengers

Well, I think Challengers might be the biggest surprise of 2024 because I was not expecting how energetic and wild a film about Tennis could get.
The Fall Guy
The Fall Guy revels in the joy of filmmaking, especially all the stunt and action work that goes into modern cinema. Full of charming characters and a dog that only understands French.

Hundreds of Beavers

Hundreds of Beavers starts the film with a joyful song about applejack as beavers destroy the tavern underneath them and then goes 100 miles an hour from there.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians
While it might not be a high bar to leap over, but Percy Jackson and the Olympians might win the away for most improved. It is a series full of actors and writers who get the material and are clearly having fun with it, and that fun gets brought to the screen in droves.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

They say that the third time is the charm, and well, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 went and proved that correct in 2024. Look, there is a reason that Jim Carrey came out of retirement to do this film, and it might be one of his best-ever comedic performances.
Star Trek: Lower Decks
While it might get derided for being the silly Star Trek animated show. But Star Trek: Lower Decks shows its love and passion for the series in the joy that it brings to the screen, and that was abundantly clear in its final season.

Twisters

Look, to be fair with you, Twisters had no right being as good as it was. It is a trumped-up, not quite sequel to a 90s film. Well, they looked at that label and said, ‘Well, screw that, we are going to have a blast,’ and so they did.
And the Winner is!!!!! – Hundreds of Beavers

Directed by – Mike Cheslik
Written by – Mike Cheslik & Ryland Brickson Cole Tews
I don’t think I have ever seen a film lean into the abstract surrealist joy as much as Hundreds of Beavers did. Every moment of the film was either a gag or setting up for a gag in a wave of humorous joy. It is all filmed in black and white and is oscillating between slapstick, surreal commentary, and abstract shenanigans. My best thought in describing the film is, what if Buster Keaton and the Looney Tunes came together and had a baby in the mid-west of America and asked Jackie Chan to babysit, but he is a cool babysitter who lets you play video games?
Ryland Brickson Cole Tews is throwing all of himself and his body into this role, which the film absolutely needs and even when it entered the macabre, it still found ways to make me laugh like deep belly chuckles. Hundreds of Beavers was one of the joys of 2024, and I am so glad I watched it. What are your favourite fun cinematic moments from 2024? Let us know in the comments below.
