TL;DR – A beautiful character piece that makes the most of the short run time.
Score – 4 out of 5 stars

Review –
Today we are going to be doing small mini-reviews for all the Star Trek Shorts, starting with an exploration of what it means to step forward and change your life.
So to set the scene, it is after Will You Take My Hand? and Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) has officially entered the Command Training Program, which is a huge achievement, which is completely lost on her mother Siobhan (Mimi Kuzyk). As this is going on a standard cargo run is interrupted by a stowaway and the two are about to crash together.

This
is very much a character episode, as it really explores the world of Tilly, the
things that motivate her, and the things that hold her back. In some respects, you can understand where Siobhan is
coming from because no parent wants to see their child in pain, but she has
not seen the growth that Tilly has had. All of this is demonstrated by a
fantastic performance by Mary Wiseman who really came into her own during Season
One, and I am really interested to see where she takes Tilly in Season Two.
While this is what we would normally call a bottle episode, because it takes place on
established sets, it does not mean that they haven’t also taken some
risks. You see this in the accidental food explosion in the mess hall, and also
in the camouflage tech/biological process of Me Hani Ika Hali Ka Po (Yadira
Guevara-Prip).

In the end, do we recommend Runaway? Yes, we do. It is an episode that really shows the strengths of the short run time, and as long as I assume that Tilly was not teleporting Po across the sector at the end, then it is all good.
