Review –

While I was not alone here, I know when I walked out of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom I was greatly disappointed at all the talent that went into what felt like a missed opportunity. It was a film that had an end goal in mind but not how to get to that goal in an organic way. Well, today a little surprise was dropped on the internet with a short film showing the aftermath and if anything it shows just how good the goal they were shooting for was.

The setup is really simple, you have family with a Father (Andre Holland) and Mother (Natalie Martinez) cooking food from their three children (Melody Hurd, Pierson Salvador, Noah Cole & Ethan Cole). There is the usual bickering with a little extra edge because this is still a family coming together when the father notices that nobody is outside anymore and that is when you hear the first rumble.

This is all on the small scale but the production design is really well done, the dinosaurs, an Allosaurus and a family of a species of Ceratopsidae (I don’t think it was the Triceratops but it was a bit dark) were all well created and have the weight and strength that they need. In eight minutes the show all the joy and terror that come with dinosaurs and that is really great to watch.

The story itself, I did kind of feel each of the big plot points coming, the moment you see the herbivore coming you knew what couldn’t be that far behind. Or the moment the family got away anyone who has watched a Jurassic Park film would have noticed what a great size that camper van was for fitting a carnivore’s head inside. But while you could see it coming it is so well-acted and structured that it is still a delight to watch. There were a couple of moments where I wondered if they were going to take it to that next level vis-a-vis the babies but thankfully they held back.

In the end, do we recommend Battle at Big Rock? Yes, yes we would. I thought I had burnt out of the Jurassic Park franchise but then this shows with a clever story and good framing just how powerful a story with dinosaurs can be. Also, I would be happy to see more of these short films in the future.
