Star Wars: Ahsoka – Part Three: Time to Fly – TV Review

TL;DR – It is a smaller episode, but it still packs a punch.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Ahsoka Review

After our double-act opening look at Ahsoka with Master and Apprentice and Toil and Trouble, I wondered what direction it would take from there. We had a lot of unanswered questions and a map, and you know I like maps. We got a tight action sequence, some politics, and one clear homage in our third episode.

So to set the scene, after finding out that Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) still had production facilities working, and Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) was able to sneak a tracker onto a shipment to discover something is going wrong in the Deneb system. It is time to call in the cavalry, but will Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) be left hanging? Now from here, we will be looking at the episode as a whole, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

After moving at such a pace in the opening episodes, it was nice that this was more of a moment to explore our characters. We knew that Sabine had to pick up her training again after trying to bruiser her way through her last encounter with Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno). Taking that time to show precision moves was a nice take on Jedi training, and we got some more time with Huyang (David Tennant). However, I think you will notice where the sequence goes when you see that blinder get taken off the shelf. I am glad it was not a complete grab from the sequence in A New Hope, but you could feel its DNA everywhere.

What I appreciated in this episode was the Science Fiction, or at least the Star Wars version of a WW2 aerial battle. The T-6 One-Nine-Seven-Four took the role of a bomber with its tail gun blasting out, while the enemy’s ship design could not look more like a WW2 fighter if they tired. Even the turbo lasers look more like the flak you see in old films. We get this cat-and-mouse chase across the system, including one of the series’ best moments so far: When Ahsoka gets out on the shuttle hull to use her lightsabres to protect the ship while they reboot the power. This whole action sequence was well constructed, even if there was no real tension, as they soon whittled down to the named characters.

One area where they are really focusing on is the build-up to The Force Awakens worldview, where the New Republic fumbles their lead and lets The First Order rise. I don’t feel this was the strongest element of the episode. There is no nuance here. But seeing more Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) in the show was excellent.

In the end, do we recommend Time to Fly? Yes, yes, we do. So far, each episode has been a solid outing. While nothing has taken my breath away yet, I am intrigued to see where these characters go from here.
