Ahsoka Review

Thinking back on this season, it has been interesting, but I have not found the depths that many other people have with the show. I think part of that is that I am not coming with the wealth of experience from The Clone Wars and Rebels TV shows we draw from. However, this week, I am starting to see hints of what others revel in: destruction and creation coming in equal measures.

So to set the scene, in Time to Fly, Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson), Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), and Huyang (David Tennant) discovered that Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) has been building a giant hyperspace ship able to jump between galaxies. She wants to jump to where they think Thrawn ended up, bringing the last living Imperial Fleet Admiral back from the dead. Even though their ship has crashed, and they are stuck on the planet, the team has to do something to stop the map from being decoded before it is too late. Now from here, we will be looking at the episode as a whole, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

Above all else, I liked how this episode depicted the weight of choices. People don’t make flippant actions; you understand the drive or manipulation that went into their decisions. Was it Sabine’s choice to hand over the map, was it force manipulation from Lord Baylan (Ray Stevenson), or a combination of both? It doesn’t matter because I felt that each of them was a legitimate choice, given the show’s context. On that point, it is profoundly sad that we have lost the great Ray Stevenson. His character is not there to do the big lore dumps like many others. But he gives every word of dialogue he speaks meaning. There is history and weight to his words, and you feel a longing regret for the weary road he has travelled to get to where he is now.

It was also wonderful to see that weight replicated in the action scenes, of which there were many throughout the episode. We get a long series of close quarters fight scenes from the ship to the map henge. Each action combination was different, creating unique complications and opportunities. I like that they incorporated more force powers into the confrontations, seeing the whole gamut of techniques rather than just firing off some lighting here and there. I think many people will be disappointed that Marrok (Paul Darnell) ended up being nobody. Still, the show never signalled that they were anything other than the key henchmen, so I am not sure what people expected.

From a production perspective, I am glad that we have ended our time on the planet because the gloominess of it all was starting to outstay its welcome. I liked the set design, but seeing some variations on circle constructions would be nice. Also, the choice to illuminate the lightsabres makes all the action scenes pop that little bit more when you see the interplay of light on everyone’s faces. So, having the Fallen Jedi’s lightsabres being red but not quite the red hue of a full-Sith Lightsabre both plays into the worldbuilding of their characters and the visual representation of their fighting. I know there will be a lot of discussion about Hayden being back. Still, I have to shout out to our Captain Carson Teva (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee), who seems to be the glue holding this time period of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and now Ahsoka together.

In the end, do we recommend Part Four: Fallen Jedi? Yes. I think this is the first episode where everything fell into place for me. I am fascinated to see where we go from here and how much that choice comes back to haunt everyone.
