Agatha All Along: Circle Sewn With Fate / Unlock Thy Hidden Gate – TV Review

TL;DR – It was time for Agatha to get the gang back together, that is, if she had ever had a gang before.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Disclosure – I paid for the Disney+ service that viewed this film.

Agatha All Along Review

Well, I was not sure what to expect when I sat down to watch the first outing of Agatha All Along, but the first episode, Seekest Thou the Road, was kind of a blast. But that left me with some high expectations for the follow-up. Thankfully, with some clever cast compositions, I think this might have landed even better.

So, to set the scene, after Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) gets her memory back but not her mojo, she is hit with a realisation: she has less than a day to live. Some very powerful people are after her, and thanks to a snitch witch, they know where Agatha is and that she has lost her power. What do you do in a situation like this? Well, maybe it is time to get a temporary coven together, but then Agatha is not historically known for playing well with others. Now, from here, we will be looking at the episode as a whole, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

Watching this episode, I understood why Disney did a double episode drop on the opening night. Because this very much feels like the first episode of the show in that it is the one that starts moving things along. If you are going on a quest, you need a party, and this episode is all about getting a gang together. Not only did this give us a chance to peer into this magical world, but more time for us to get to see Agatha and the Teen’s (Joe Locke) relationship. Also, it gives us a bit more intrigue into what is going on with the Teen because he is under some sort of curse.

From at least this episode, I like the coven/group/party dynamics that we have. Teen is the eager fanatic walking around with a bit too many blinders, and they should and would have been left behind if Agatha had her way. Agatha loathes company, but here she needs it, or maybe she just needs some bodies as shields along the way. Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata), Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn), and Lilia Calderu (Patti LuPone) all have their own reasons for coming along that makes them temporary allies of Agatha but tenuous just hanging on by a thread. Finally, Sharon Davis (Debra Jo Rupp) has no idea what she is doing or where she is going. She just thought this was a party. Through them all together, you have a delight to watch.

From a production point of view, I loved the simple way they designed Salem’s Seven movements to feel otherworldly as if they were working on a different rhythm. It is a combination of good choreography and editing, but it works. Also, our crescendo scene with the song was fundamentally compelling. I loved the composition of the scene as well as the music, which I am sure has more resonance than to the story than just being a good song.
In the end, do we recommend Agatha All Along: Circle Sewn With Fate / Unlock Thy Hidden Gate? Yes, we do. I think this built and complemented the first episode and gave all the actors to have moments to shine.
