Agatha All Along: Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power – TV Review

TL;DR – It was a frustrating episode, but maybe that was not its fault.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Agatha All Along Review

Well, so far, I have been enjoying my time with Agatha All Along. The hijinks, along with the fun tone, are the sort of show that I need at the moment. However, we are starting to get to the pointy end of the season, and I wonder if we will start getting some of these questions answered before the closing credits?

So, to set the scene, in the wake of death, the Coven needed to find a new Green Witch, and much to Agatha’s (Kathryn Hahn) frustration, the universe sent her Rio (Aubrey Plaza), one of the many witches that she had crossed with over the years. But The Witches’ Road is proving to be a perilous place because not only is it testing the witches, but it is also shining a light on their past, something that many a witch would like to avoid. Especially since bringing in Rio may have opened a doorway for more things to enter The Road. Now, from here, we will be looking at the episode as a whole, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

This is a bit of an odd duck episode for me, and that might have to do with the Marvel marketing team spoiling the cliffhanger revealed minutes after the episode aired. That choice undercut all the build-up for me, even though that cliffhanger reveal was the most likely outcome for who Teen (Joe Locke) was. This was probably not helped by the Salem Seven showing up as both a literal and narrative ‘oh wait, we need to push this plot along’ or the actual big reveal at the end being almost blink, and you’ll miss it.

However, while there were frustrations with this episode, there were touches that I did like. I think they nailed the possession sequence from a story and production makeup level. I also believe that everything that they did with Agatha in this episode was fascinating. For the first time, you felt like she understood real fear and that the pain of being betrayed by her own mother came through. Also, I liked everything that Kathryn Hahn did after Agatha accidentally killed Alice (Ali Ahn) because, through her performance, I do actually believe that she never meant to kill the witch.

In the end, do we recommend Agatha All Along: Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power? This is a hard one to say because my time with it was tainted. There were still some interesting things going on in the background, and honestly, it might also be fair to say that the costume, makeup, and set teams are delivering above and beyond this season. The marketing just needs to understand that hype and spoilers are not the same thing.
