Agatha All Along: Death’s Hand in Mine – TV Review

TL;DR – This was an oddly poignant yet slightly unsettling episode that I am not quite sure how I feel about.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Disclosure – I paid for the Disney+ service that viewed this film.

Lilia falls.

Agatha All Along Review

We are looking down the barrel of the endgame for this series, and I always get a bit nervous when there is a lot left to explore and not that much time to do it in. There becomes a point where you don’t have the luxury to saunter around and have to hem those dresses and start running like Princess Diana at a children’s sports carnival. Thankfully, I think we are getting that today.

So, to set the scene, back in Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power, we discovered that Teen (Joe Locke) was actually the reincarnation of Billy Maximoff, who was killed at the end of WandaVision. We found that when he forced Jen (Sasheer Zamata) and Lilia (Patti LuPone) to cast Agatha away and then jump off the road. But some witches just won’t be stopped, and even off the road, there is a chance to find the answers to what you seek. Now, from here, we will be looking at the episode as a whole, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

For someone who just got yeeted off the road last week, I was surprised to find that the focus of this week’s story was Lilia. But then, she hadn’t had a focus trial yet, so that was not that out of the realm that she would be back. Just in general, I was happy with this choice because Patti LuPone has been mainly in the background this season, and this was the episode where she shined. We got to see so much of her range as she darted between timelines from concerned to determined and everything in between. Indeed, the ending of the episode would not have hit as hard as it did without her performance.

This episode also takes a swing at the production side of things, making good use of that Disney parent company to get everyone synergising into famous witch-y villains from stories past. I would be a lot more cynical about this if they didn’t go the whole hog and make each of those costumes work as well as they did. Also, it is becoming more apparent that all those throw-away moments in the end credits might not be as throw-away as they first seemed. Indeed, there was a lot of production in this episode, including framing and making sense of all the different timelines that should be championed.

While there were a lot of big character moments throughout the episode, there were also some big reveals, like that Rio is actually Death (Aubrey Plaza). The MCU has been actively avoiding bringing the personification of Death into the world, even in stories where she should be front and centre. So, picking now to double down on it would feel like such an odd choice if they had not cast Aubrey Plaza in the role. We also got some of the best lines of the show so far, with ‘damn, using his full name’ getting a full-on snort of laughter out of me. Also, the design of the dangling swords was an excellent touch.

In the end, do we recommend Agatha All Along: Death’s Hand in Mine? Well, so far, I think they have nailed every episode of the show, or at least they were enjoyable, and todays was no exception. It will be interesting to see if that ending was a cliffhanger or as definitive as it seems. Also, the question we will ask on Halloween is: can they stick the landing?
