Star Trek: Discovery Review –
We are getting to the pointy end of Discovery’s final season, and so far, I have been enjoying our treasure hunt across the galaxy. However, as we come towards the final piece in the puzzle, we need to ask, will the treasure be worth the hunt?
So to set the scene, in Erigah, two significant events happened. First, the Breen went from being mysterious and dangerous to being outright hostile, with the knowledge of what The Federation was seeking. Secondly, the crew finally unlocked the answer to take them to the final clue. This time, it was hidden in the Eternal Gallery and Archive in the book Labyrinths of the Mind. The Gallery is hiding in The Badlands, and hopefully, the USS Discovery-A can get to them before the Breen. Now, we will be looking at the episode as a whole from here, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

I have not really connected with Mol (Eve Harlow) this season as much as others, but this episode is the one where it all lined up. The way that she played the Primarch (Tony Nappo) in front of all his troops and positioned herself into a place of power and protection for a moment was a masterful act. You can see as she moves their underlings around like pawns on a chess board, putting things together for a coup. This narrative arc creates the framing device for the episode, and I quite liked it, even if you knew how it was going to end from the start.
The central thrust of the episode is Michael (Sonequa Martin-Green) being stuck inside this program in her brain, the final test before being led to the solar system the technology is stashed in. The construct is created around the place and person most important to her, the Gallery, and, of course, Book (David Ajala). It is the final test, but failure is death. On the one hand, all of this is just a narratively convenient reason to keep them all in The Gallery rather than getting out of there when the Breen arrives. But it also meant that we got some emotive acting from Sonequa that hit home for me. Her final monologue was terrific because you felt its depths, and it also made sense that this was the answer to the puzzle.

While this was all going on, we got an episode full of these small moments that were a delight. I liked that we continued to get the crew working together, and it was fantastic to see Rhys (Patrick Kwok-Choon) take the lead and show off his command skills. I totally dug the vibe of The Gallery; they were so open and friendly that you expected there to be this evil twist, but no, they just like books and knowledge. Also, I liked the sound of the doors closing, which is an odd thing to point out, I know, still yet I feel compelled to do so. whoever’s choice it was to hire Tig Notaro all the way back in Brother during Discovery’s second season, take a bow. Every week, they come in and say something ridiculous, and that becomes the moment of the week. Last week, we got Seven of Limes, which is just a chef’s kiss. But this week, out of nowhere, we got a call back to Star Trek: Lower Deck’s Where Pleasant Fountains Lie. It was a moment that was a delight, but it also perfectly fit into everything we know about The Hysperians.
In the end, do we recommend Star Trek: Discovery – Labryinths? Yes, we do. So far, Season Five of Discovery have all been solid episodes. They have worked to link the show back into the Star Trek universe a lot better while also still charting their own path. I hope the final two episodes stick the landing.
