Movie Review – Tomorrowland

TL;DR – So close to being a great film, but just does not get there, because it takes no care in building the universe it is set in.

Score – 2 out of 5 Stars

Review – Close, but no cigar, Prawie robi wielką różnicę, Knapp daneben ist auch vorbei, Melkein on metri maalista, and 功虧一簣, these are all things I would use to describe Tomorrowland. Tomorrowland is visually impressive, well-acted and has a good message but in the end, it just falls flat.

Before I go on I should mention the things that do work. Firstly the special effects are top notch, there is a train sequence that really makes you want to visit this Tomorrowland. As well as this, there are some really good action beats during the first 2 acts of the film which work both technically and visually. The casting of the film works George Clooney (Frank Walker) shows why he is still a tier 1 star, also the rapport between the three leads Clooney, as well as young actors Britt Robinson (Casey) and Raffey Cassidy (Athena) works really well. Also, (a bit spoilery here so warning)  I really feel that the movie does have a good message at its heart that we are becoming to isolationist as a society and that we don’t care so much about the future that we may be heading toward its ruin.

But, and I am afraid it is a big but, the movie does not work. I feel the writers were hoping that the audience would just suspend their disbelief and just go with the film and not ask questions about Tomorrowland. But I am afraid this is where the movie falls flat for me, World Building. The movie completely fails to explain the universe it is creating in a meaningful way, I can’t explain too much more than this, but if you have seen the film you will know you walk away going, but why did …?, how did that affect that …?, why did they do that …? and this really annoyed me. As well as this, Hugh Laurie just does not work as Governor Nix. Hugh Laurie is an amazing actor, that can do bad, can do good and can do grey but the movie can’t make up its mind which one he is.

I feel really bad for being so negative with this film because it is really trying to be good, which is better than so many other movies I watch and it had so much potential but in the end, it just doesn’t work.
