Exploring Sydney

Well, it has been a while since I jumped into the world of an Explore-It, and now is as good a time as any to explore a trip I took a bit ago to the most populous city in Australia [for the time being], Sydney. After Day 1, which was all about the zoos, and Day 2, which was all about Boats, today will be rain and Ancient Egypt.  

I awoke in the morning to the news that it would be raining during the day. I had understood this, but I didn’t really know the deluge that I was about to experience. I mean, I am from Queensland, and we know rain; I was so wrong.

One of my main reasons for making the trip to Sydney was that I wanted to take a tour of the Ramses & the Gold of the Pharaohs exhibit that was then at the Australian Museum. Ancient Egypt is one of my loves, but I have never gotten a chance to see some of the artefacts up close and personal before.  

It was a delight to read and learn about the history of Ra and then see that history played out in the artifacts on display. While there were a lot of details that I already knew, I absolutely walked out of there with a better understanding of the ruler than what I did when I walked in.

The rest of the Museum was truly fascinating, as we explored the many facets of New South Wales. Though I will say, you don’t quite realise just how old the building is until you try and use some of the spiral staircases and you make a call to your deity of choice before attempting a descent.

Walking outside, it was clear that the rain was here, but it was more of a drizzle compared to what I was used to, so I thought people were being melodramatic and went for a walk to explore a part of the city I had never been in. This was my critical mistake because I was 100% not prepared for the dumping I was walking into. The heavens opened up, and a wall of water descended at the exact moment I was out in the open with no cover. I had an umbrella; it did nothing.

After hiding out in a cinema for a bit, I finally made it back to my hotel, drenched from head to toe. But the rain finally let up just long enough for me to get to the airport, and for me to pretend that I was not going to be stuck in wet shoes for the rest of the day. Due to the rain, my plane out was delayed multiple times, to the point that we were on the tarmac, and chasing the curfew that would have kept me in the city overnight. But success: we made it out with minutes to spare.

Sydney was a delight, rain notwithstanding, but it did show that I had a lot more to explore next time I come down.
