Lady Six Sky of The Maya First Look and Analysis – Civilization VI: New Frontier Pass

TL;DR: We get a civilization that finally goes tall

We are getting a new expansion for Civilization VI, well not quite, over the next year we have a season pass, the New Frontier Pass, which will give us several new Civilizations and Game Modes over the next year (which you can find out more information HERE). The first of the new Civilizations has been released so let’s dive into The Maya.

Leader Agenda: Solitary – She dislikes encroaching civs and she tries to keep her cities in a cluster near the capital.

Civilization BonusMayab – No extra housing from Fresh Water/Coast but Farms provide more housing and gold, Amenities for each Luxury resource adjacent to the City Centre
Leader BonusIx Mutal Ajaw – Cities within 6 tiles of the Capital get a boost to all yearlings, other cities away from this limit get a penalty to yields. Bonus combat strength for units within 6 tiles of the Capital
Unique UnitHul’che – Ranged replacement for Archer, Stronger and gets a bonus against wounded opponents 
Unique DistrictObservatory – A campus replacement that gets an adjacency bonus from Plantations and Farms.

The first feature you notice is that this is a Civilization that has as many penalties as they do bonuses. To begin with, it has not housing bonuses from water (fresh or otherwise) and you get penalties to tile yields when you leave the protection of your capital’s bubble. This immediately raises the question as to why would you play The Maya and indeed few civilizations get penalties, most notably Congo’s lack of religion. However, what we get here is similar to Mali, where those penalties are offset but other really interesting features.

It is clear from the design, that this is a civilization that is designed to favour a tall rather than wide play. Throughout the history of the game, there have been several competing strategies as to how to approach the game. Some people favour going tall, building only a couple of cities and concentrating all your production/science/gold etc on them. Others prefer going wide, building as many cities as possible and get the sheer weight of numbers on your side. Different games in the Civilization franchise has favoured one or the other with Civilization 6 falling more on the wide side, which makes The Maya a really interesting choice.

The lack of housing bonus means that your capital is not fixed to a river, freeing you up to find that spot with luxury resources in it to boost your amenities. This is a civilization, where you will want to make use of the map pins so you can place out your cities as optimally as the terrain will allow and I have enjoyed all the graphs and charts over at Civfanatics trying to work out how many cities you can fit in that ring. With an established core, you can use that science bonus, the extra gold from farms, and the boost to your combat units to power forward, as long as you have some good spots to place your Observatory. Now, of course, nothing is stopping you from going on a ‘conquering your neighbours’ rampage, but I think it will be interesting to see if people stick to that core.

 I enjoyed the art style or the leader and I am glad they picked a fresh face to lead The Maya with Lady Six Sky. I’m not sure though that this will be one of those civs for me because I am a player that always says that they are going tall right up until the point that I go wide. However, if anything can get me to stick to a tall civilization, I think this will be it.
