TL;DR – A blast of fun from start to finish, even before the wirework starts flipping people through the air.

Polite Society Review –

During the year, there were those films that I meant to see, but circumstances always got in the way of screening or sessions. For me this year, one of the ones that slipped away was the fascinating Polite Society. Well, it has now dropped on streaming, so I can see if it holds up as well as I hope.

So to set the scene, Ria (Priya Kansara) has had one dream all her life: to become a stuntwoman. She films herself on YouTube, trying to break into her future, and she usually drags her sister, Lena Khan (Ritu Arya), to film. But she can’t master the flying reverse spin kick no matter how much she practices. However, Ria has a crisis of faith when her sister decides to get married to Salim Shah (Akshay Khanna) rather than go back to art school. He is a smarmy wanker, or so Ria feels, but as her life starts to unravel, her future starts looking equally fraught.

Barbie – Movie Review

TL;DR – A deeply sincere film, swinging for the fences. Not everything lands, but you can’t dismiss the passion.

Barbie Review –


If you had asked me which film would have captured everyone’s attention in 2023, I honestly would not have expected it to be Barbie. That is just my biases being shown in full light for all to see. But with every set photo, every casting announcement, and every trailer, you could feel this surge of excitement, and it shows just how good the marketing team behind the movie is and the building excitement to see what a live-action Barbie film could look like. Well, today, that wait is over, and we can dive into a world full of pink where life might still be plastic, but it’s fantastic.

So to set the scene, in Barbie Land, we have a world where a day is not a day without a blowout party with a bespoke song and extensive choreography. In this serene world with pink buildings and gleaming coast lives Barbie (Margot Robbie). Things are looking good. Well, when you have a waterslide from your bedroom to the pool, that is a certain wondrous luxury. But in this wonderous world, Barbie starts to have an existential crisis that manifests itself in different ways, like flat feet. Trying to find a purpose, Barbie decides, after some pushing from Weird Barbie (Kate McKinnon), to visit the real world to find the truth about the universe, oh and Ken (Ryan Gosling) stowaways for the ride as well.

Red Notice – Movie Review

Red Notice Review –

Heists, betrayals, double-crosses, and more. Look, these films are usually my jam. Watching two groups try to outmanoeuvre each other, not knowing if a plan will succeed or fail, is a lot of fun. When you get a film that fails on that front, it can be more disappointing than usual.   

So to set the scene, apparently, when Cleopatra and Mark Anthony married, Marc presented her with three ornate eggs. With their deaths, the eggs were thought a myth until two were found by accident. Today, one of the eggs is held in the museum in Rome … or is it. For FBI profiler on art crime John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) has had a tip-off that notorious thief Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) is about to steal it. Insert action scene here.
