Star Trek: Discovery – Jinaal – TV Review

TL;DR – We continue our quest in Trill, where all may not be what it seems, and the game of politics continues.

Star Trek: Discovery Review –

As we fly through the galaxy on this quest, it has been interesting to see just how much this season of Discovery is linking itself back to the past series of Star Trek. It has always felt like it has been pushed there by many people into being more of its own thing. But now, it is embracing its place in the Star Trek world, and I, for one, would love to see it.

So to set the scene, last week Under the Twin Moons, we discovered that the next clue in the treasure hunt was not hidden on Betazed as it first seemed, but was instead on Trill. This was possibly great news for Adira (Blu del Barrio) because Gray (Ian Alexander) has been studying there to be a Guardian. However, as the race heats up, the question is, how will they find the next clue when it has been 800 years since it was hidden? Star Trek: Discovery – Under the Twin Moons – TV Review

TL;DR – We get our first goodbye, and our race forward continues.

Star Trek: Discovery Review –

We know going into this season that there was not a plan to have this be the last when they were shooting and that extra filming needed to take place to tie things up. However, today, we get to see how, even without planning it, they have started the process of saying goodbye, and I think that was for the best.

So to set the scene, after Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis) outsmarted the crew of the USS Discovery-A, there was a need to catch up before they stumbled across some technology that could put the galaxy at risk. Thankfully, Stamets (Anthony Rapp) was able to recover the data and discover that on the planet Lyrek, there are twin moons that cast a dual eclipse once every seven years, an excellent place to start looking. Once the Ship is free of dust, Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) is raked over the coals, and everyone gets ready to bid Saru (Doug Jones) goodbye. Star Trek: Discovery – Red Directive – TV Review

TL;DR – With a welcome lighter tone, we get a great opening episode to set up the season.

Star Trek: Discovery Review –

Well, it was a rocky start to Star Trek Discovery, and also, it seems it will be a rocky end. Which is a pity given everything they have thrown into it and how it has finally found its voice. However, if this is to be the final season, I am glad they look to be going out on a high.

So to set the scene, we open in a friendly Federation gathering full of ambassadors as the crew help shore up this new growing Federation that is starting to get close to the resurgent Tholian Republic or the Breen Imperium. But the dinner is interrupted by a Red Notice, and the crew of the USS Discovery-A have to make a rushed jump to the wreckage of an old 24-century Romulan ship and get what is inside before scavengers can get to it. Cut to scavengers Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis) 100% getting there before anyone. Now, we will be looking at the episode as a whole from here, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

Star Trek: Discovery – Full Season 4 – TV Review

TL;DR – A season that is equal parts uplifting and frustrating

Star Trek: Discovery Review –

When I was doing an overview of the site, I realised that there were a couple of missing moments that I was not able to tie up due to things happening at the time. Well, given that today is a public holiday, I thought it would be time to correct this, and the first thing we should do is look back at Season Four of Star Trek: Discovery. When I look at this season, what I see are two distinctly different parts, one which might be the best Star Trek has to offer, and the other which was an unfortunate anchor that weighed the entire series back, and today, we will break those two halves down.  

So to set the scene, after saving the galaxy by finding the cause of “The Burn” in Season Three. The USS Discovery-A has settled into being the leading edge of the resurgent Federation. Negotiating with new members and helping distribute dilithium. However, when a mysterious force destroys the entire planet of Kwejian, there is a race to try and work out who is scouring space before another planet is destroyed. Now, we will be looking at the season as a whole from here, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

Avatar: The Last Airbender – Aang – TV Review

TL;DR – While it had its clunky moments, the first episode does a good job of setting up this world that we are about to dive into.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Review –

Today, we are looking at an interesting show because I feel that it has all the cards stacked against it. It is a live-action remake of a beloved property made by Netflix, and there is a graveyard behind us of failed attempts at this. Then there were the original creators leaving because of some pretty significant creative differences before we got one of the most ill-fated press campaigns, which was probably only tempers because Madame Webb was happening at the same time. However, a rocky production does not mean the end product is not great, and this is what we are looking at today.  

So to set the scene, in the world of Avatar, there are four elements that people can bend: Earth, Wind, Water, and Fire. However, only the Avatar can bend all four elements and use this to keep the peace between the different tribes. However, while the world waits for the next Avatar to come from the Air Tribe, the leader of the Fire Tribe, Fire Lord Sozin (Hiro Kanagawa), uses the moment of Sozin’s Comet’s appearance to attack the Air Temples all he has to do is kill the Avatar before they are announced, the only problem is that no one knows who it is, so they have to kill all of them. But they were not ready for the rambunctious Aang (Gordon Cormier), who had different ideas that fated night.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith: Season 1 – TV Review

TL;DR – This fascinatingly compelling series that took the essence of the film and then turned everything up to eleven while providing a slightly more plausible scenario.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Review –

If you are of my age, then you know about the cultural moment that was Mr. & Mrs. Smith even if you never watched the film. I did get to watch the movie at the time, and it was funny, entertaining, and incredibly hot. However, that was such a moment in pop culture history that, understandably, no one has attempted to take another stab at it before now. But after a troubled production, can the show reach the heights of where it came from? I would say yes. 

So to set the scene, we open in a small house in the middle of nowhere. It is here where John Smith (Alexander Skarsgard) and Jane Smith (Eiza Gonzalez Reyna) are enjoying a glass of wine until an unannounced car arrives and kills the both of them. Later, we see two anonymous people going through the application process to join an independent spy agency. This application process is about finding a compatible partner as well as seeing if they are a good fit for the agency. But as John (Donald Glover) and Jane (Maya Erskine) Smith settle into their new brownstone in New York, they soon discover just how intense this job can be. Halo: Sword – TV Review

TL;DR – A more contained story that was slightly frustrating until you understood its context.

Halo Review –

We are making a splash with the second of the two-episode opening for Halo’s second season. The first episode showed a bit more focus than we saw in Season One, and that intrigued me. More than anything, I want to see if this was a blip or if this is a new direction for the series.  

So to set the scene, we open with Dr. Catherine Elizabeth Halsey (Natascha McElhone) in a beautiful room, getting all her favourite things, which, of course, means that she is in prison somewhere. It is a nice prison, with pomegranate, but a prison nonetheless. Meanwhile, on Reach, John (Pablo Schreiber) is struggling to find himself now his team has been grounded by Ackerson (Joseph Morgan), and the lies continue to build. On Rubble, Kwan Ha (Yerin Ha) discovers that their precarious position might be even more perilous than they thought. Now from here, we will be looking at the episode, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

Awards – My Top 10 TV Shows of 2023

Our previous end-of-year best lists mainly focused on films because there is too much TV to get even close to a definitive list. However, this year there were too many good shows out there not to engage with them.

So this year, we will look at all the shows we reviewed last year, SEE HERE, and pick our Top 10 of the 40 shows we reviewed. For a show to count, it needed to end its run or season in 2023.

NCIS: Sydney – Blonde Ambition & Full Season 1 – TV Review

TL;DR – They may have saved the best for last with a banger of a season finale.

Well, we have come to the end of the first season of NCIS: Sydney. It has been an odd season, with moments of highs and also a lot of frustrations. However, things started to coalesce towards the end, and I wondered if the show could stick the landing.   

So to set the scene, we open at a kids birthday party where a deeply bad clown is performing for the kids, but things turn sinister when the clown steals the birthday boy. Meanwhile, they have the secretive woman Anna (Georgina Haig) they captured in Bunker Down, who has been a thorn in everyone’s side since Gone Fission. The team is wondering why Anna feels so secure even though she is in handcuffs and locked to a desk when the call comes in that the child that was stolen was JD’s (Todd Lasance). We will be looking at the episode and season as a whole from here, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

Letterkenny: Season 12 – TV review

TL;DR – Like all endings, it is bittersweet, with moments of longing, frustration, and sadness, all there with the joy of seeing people being able to stick the landing.

Letterkenny Review –

Well, like death and taxes, all things have to come to an end at some point, and today, we are looking at a series that made it to twelve seasons, a rarity in this day and age. If you want to have a look at the series as a whole, you can read our review HERE. But today, we are going to jump into that final season. One of familiarity and change.  

So to set the scene, there are a couple of stand-up comedians in town, and that has the whole gang thinking that they could take a swing at it. Wayne (Jared Keeso) is not that great at crowd work, Dan (K. Trevor Wilson) is as funny as ever, Daryl (Nathan Dales) is the big surprise of the evening, but when Katy (Michelle Mylett) comes out to roast the town, she brings a flamethrower. This creates a vibe that has people thinking about their place in the world and if they are stuck. Some flirt with moving, others explore new life choices, but then others find new friends and pull at the fabric of the town. We will be looking at the series as a whole from here, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.
