PAX Australia & Melbourne 2023 Day 5

It was the final day in Melbourne, but unlike last year, I had my flight positioned for the end of the day, so I had some time to explore the city more, which is when I found the most depressing garden in Melbourne.

The ship in Melbourne.

It is day 4 of our trip to Melbourne and the last day of PAX, and of course, this was the day that Melbourne decided to turn on the charm with a delightful morning.

PAX Australia & Melbourne 2023 Day 3

Right next to where I was staying was the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens, so if there was ever a time to have a wander, a calm Saturday morning was the time. Unfortunately, that was also the same time as a Park Run, so there was much dodging.

Well, one good night’s sleep later, and it was a slightly more welcoming day that greeted me in the morning as I made my way down the Yarra River to the Convention Centre.

PAX Australia & Melbourne 2023 Day 1

When you work in the games and pop culture space, you hear of the joy of PAX, but I have never experienced it myself, until I got there in 2022. Well, it is time for Round 2, where I know Melbourne/Narrm a touch better than before, and I see a couple of things I missed that I needed to make up for. So, in today’s and the next few Explore-It’s, we will look at our time down past the daylight savings divide to a city with an entirely different seagull-to-pigeon ratio than I have ever seen.

Set Phasers to 'Fun'

PAX Australia & Melbourne Day 4 & 5

Well, it may be almost a year late, but we are finally getting to the end of our PAX 2022 series with a look at the final days. It was the last day of PAX Aus, and for the first time, I actually took the time to stop and have a decent breakfast down by the river as the morning Sun warmed off the previous night’s rain. It was a beautiful day by any standards, but apparently quite good for Melbourne’s sometimes temperamental weather.

PAX Australia & Melbourne Day 3

After surviving my first day at PAX, I was slightly more confident about where I was in the city of Melbourne. Walking through a drying town that had been rained on, but I was still dry, I got to see more of its faces.

PAX Australia & Melbourne Day 2

After staying dry as the storms of Day 1 bucketed down, drenching the city, I took the first tentative steps down the shores of the Yarra River. I had explored Brisbane and Sydney before, but this was the first real-time getting to the heart of Melbourne.

PAX Australia & Melbourne Day 1

When you work in the games and pop culture space, you hear of the joy that is PAX, but I have never experienced it myself. I had set my sights on visiting it back in 2020, but you know what happened in 2021. But there was hope that 2022 was the year for me. So I booked my tickets back in March and hoped that the world would hold itself together till then and it kind of did. So in today’s and the next couple of Explore-It’s, we will take a look at our time down past the daylight savings divide to a city that has an entirely different seagull-to-pigeon ratio than I have ever seen.

Dune Messiah

However, before you can explore Melbourne, you need to get there, and since we still do not have any high-speed rail in Australia, it is time to board a plane. Given the time stuck waiting, I thought I would catch up on some reading, and when in doubt, it is Dune time.

Review

One of the great things about documentaries is when they take you into a world that you have no idea about. Today we get a film that does just that, with the world of Rubik’s Cubes. I don’t get Rubik’s Cubes. My brain cannot compute them. The skill involved boggles my mind, so watching it all unfold is a real joy.

Where this documentary works is by offering us an insight into a world that everyone has a handle on but then also something you can’t quite comprehend. I think everyone has played with a Rubik’s Cube at some point in their lives. It is a novelty thing, that let’s be honestly more than a few of us have only finished one because we pealed the colour panels off and switched them around. It is a tactile situation that we can all relate to, so when you see people move their fingers in a blur and shift chaos into order in mere seconds.
