TL;DR – A solid action flick, with a good homage to the titular video game, but it is not the golden gem the video game adaptation that is still eluding filmmakers
Score – 3.5 out of 5 stars
Post-Credit Scene – There is a mid-credit scene after the title card
The elusive video game adaption, for years Hollywood has tried to crack that particular gem. While comic book films like The Avengers and unfilmable literary epics like Lord of the Rings have found their feet, video game adaptations have remained just out of reach for the industry. In this battle, we have had disasters like Super Mario Bros. and close-but-no-cigar films like Warcraft. So today we have our first major attempt in a while to cross that divide … and it almost gets there.
TL;DR – This movie is everything you have come to expect from a Jason Bourne film, but that means all the good and the bad is here.
Score – 2.5 out of 5 stars
I have to say before we start that the original Bourne Trilogy (Identity, Supremacy & Ultimatum) is probably one of my favourite trilogies of all time, for me I put it up there with the original Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. The follow-up Legacy had some interesting ideas but it lacked the style and understanding of the previous films, and it felt like they had just inserted the Bourne universe into an original IP. So given how high my impression of the first films was, and how low the follow up was, I was preparing myself for this iteration to be a train wreck, but thankfully it’s not. For me, it is everything the old Bourne’s were, however, the last of those films were made almost 10 years ago, and that is a bit of the problem if you are just doing the same thing over again.
TL;DR – While not the best movie I have seen this
year, it’s full of charm and a lot of fun, well worth a look
start I should mention I have not seen the source TV show, unlike Get Smart, MASH or Hogan’s Heroes etc. it just
did not get a lot of reruns on TV where I live, so I no idea if this is a
faithful adaption or not, on a side note can you imagine how bad a remake of
MASH would be, so I am just judging on what I saw in the movies.
