Fallout: The End – TV Review

TL;DR – This first episode very much captured the vibe, even if the pacing didn’t quite hold up to the end.

Fallout Review –

Well, this is an interesting one for me. Back in the days of Fallout 3, I devoured this series and this world, but since then, I fell off this world. Maybe its bleakness just didn’t quite do it for me with the current world. However, the thought of a tv series did intrigue me, and Silo recently showed it can be done. With that, I took some tentative steps into the post-apocalypse world to see if it would start a flame in my heart.  

So to set the scene, we open in 2077; that feels like it is a world of the past that is close but not quite like the one we have today, yet actually the future. After a series of resource wars, the USA and China are on the brink of apocalypse, and it is on everyone’s mind as Cooper Howard (Walton Goggins) appears as a cowboy at a local child’s birthday party. Which sadly, it comes to pass as multiple nuclear explosions destroy Los Angeles as Cooper rides off with his daughter on a horse. Two hundred nineteen years later, Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell) lives in Vault 33, one of the few places that survived the carnage. Her dad, Hank MacLean (Kyle MacLachlan), is the overseer of the Vault, and the day of her wedding is a big event for everyone. However, the tri-annual visit from Vault 32 does not quite go according to plan. Now from here, we will be looking at the series as a whole, so there may be [SPOILERS] ahead.

The Stolen Valley (Alta Valley) – Movie Review

TL;DR – While it starts strong, it unfortunately runs out of gas after the first act as the storyline becomes convoluted.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

The Stolen Valley Review –

Today, we are looking at a film that is wearing its influences on its sleeves. That is not a bad thing. In fact, just last week, we watched Monkey Man do just that, and it was grand. But there is danger in this approach because if people are constantly thinking about other movies and not your own work, well, something has gone badly wrong. Today, we look at where The Stolen Valley lands on this spectrum. 

So to set the scene, Lupe (Briza Covarrubias) struggles to find her place in the world. Trying to connect with her mother, Lizette (Paulette Lamori), learn her native language, Diné, or just get ahead in a world where everyone is taking from her. But when her mother becomes sick, and there are only experimental and expensive options left, Lupe is forced to find her father, who she thought was dead. But a run-in with Maddy (Allee Sutton Hethcoat) after she just crossed local crime lord Antonio (Ricardo Herranz) leads to a dangerous gun-filled chase.

Star Trek: Discovery – Under the Twin Moons – TV Review

TL;DR – We get our first goodbye, and our race forward continues.

Star Trek: Discovery Review –

We know going into this season that there was not a plan to have this be the last when they were shooting and that extra filming needed to take place to tie things up. However, today, we get to see how, even without planning it, they have started the process of saying goodbye, and I think that was for the best.

So to set the scene, after Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis) outsmarted the crew of the USS Discovery-A, there was a need to catch up before they stumbled across some technology that could put the galaxy at risk. Thankfully, Stamets (Anthony Rapp) was able to recover the data and discover that on the planet Lyrek, there are twin moons that cast a dual eclipse once every seven years, an excellent place to start looking. Once the Ship is free of dust, Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) is raked over the coals, and everyone gets ready to bid Saru (Doug Jones) goodbye. Now, we will be looking at the episode as a whole from here, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

Star Trek: Discovery – Red Directive – TV Review

TL;DR – With a welcome lighter tone, we get a great opening episode to set up the season.

Star Trek: Discovery Review –

Well, it was a rocky start to Star Trek Discovery, and also, it seems it will be a rocky end. Which is a pity given everything they have thrown into it and how it has finally found its voice. However, if this is to be the final season, I am glad they look to be going out on a high.

So to set the scene, we open in a friendly Federation gathering full of ambassadors as the crew help shore up this new growing Federation that is starting to get close to the resurgent Tholian Republic or the Breen Imperium. But the dinner is interrupted by a Red Notice, and the crew of the USS Discovery-A have to make a rushed jump to the wreckage of an old 24-century Romulan ship and get what is inside before scavengers can get to it. Cut to scavengers Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis) 100% getting there before anyone. Now, we will be looking at the episode as a whole from here, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

Star Trek: Discovery – Full Season 4 – TV Review

TL;DR – A season that is equal parts uplifting and frustrating  

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Star Trek: Discovery Review –

When I was doing an overview of the site, I realised that there were a couple of missing moments that I was not able to tie up due to things happening at the time. Well, given that today is a public holiday, I thought it would be time to correct this, and the first thing we should do is look back at Season Four of Star Trek: Discovery. When I look at this season, what I see are two distinctly different parts, one which might be the best Star Trek has to offer, and the other which was an unfortunate anchor that weighed the entire series back, and today, we will break those two halves down.  

So to set the scene, after saving the galaxy by finding the cause of “The Burn” in Season Three. The USS Discovery-A has settled into being the leading edge of the resurgent Federation. Negotiating with new members and helping distribute dilithium. However, when a mysterious force destroys the entire planet of Kwejian, there is a race to try and work out who is scouring space before another planet is destroyed. Now, we will be looking at the season as a whole from here, so there will be some [SPOILERS] ahead.

Monkey Man – Movie Review

TL;DR – An explosive and raw revenge film that leaves nothing in the tank as it explodes in a riot of action.

Monkey Man Review –

When it comes to the Revenge genre, they can be a bit hit-and-miss. You have to get the audience to sympathise with your protagonist because if they don’t, well then all that violence starts looking bad. The best example of this in the modern era, John Wick, a film which gets name-checked here, and is an excellent example of doing this right. Well, today, we might be able to add a new entry to that list.

So to set the scene, we open with a mother telling her son about the legend of Hanuman. But in the present, that boy does not have a name. He is Kid/Bobby/Monkey Man (Dev Patel) who spends a lot of time throwing cage matches for Tiger (Sharlto Copley) wearing a monkey mask. It is a brutal occupation, but it gets Kid the money to enact his plan, starting with getting into the ground floor of Queenie’s (Ashwini Kalsekar) very illegal but very popular entertainment business. Because Kid has a mission, and that is to bring pain to the people who cause his family harm.

Mapping The MonsterVerse – Map-It

Mapping The MonsterVerse –

Well, it is Easter at the time of writing this, and the latest entry into the MonsterVerse, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, has landed in cinemas. The MonsterVerse is the universe from Legendary where Godzilla fights a bunch of other Kaijus/Titans, including Kong, and usually in the middle of populated cities.  

With that in mind, we thought it would be interesting to see what it looks like when we chart all that destruction onto a map. WARNING: there will be some Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Spoilers ahead.
